Quora LogoWelcome to Quora – Your Online Knowledge Market

For those of you who aren’t already familiar with Quora, I thought I would let you know a little about it, how to use it and about the excellent rowing category it has. Quora is essentially an online knowledge market, a place where registered users can type in question or topics and have other registered users answer questions and edit information, creating a community of knowledge.

The website was founded in June 2009 by Charlie Cheever and Adam D’Angelo (Facebook’s former CTO) and was made available to the public in June 2010.

I had heard a lot about Quora over the last few months so I decided to take it for a spin. After signing up to Quora and logging in I realised it wasn’t just your basic question and answer site. Any topic can be typed into the search field and information on that topic can be posted or edited by registered users.

But, I already hear you asking...“How is Quora different from other sites such as Friendfeed, Wiki How and Yahoo Answers?” I thought the best way to find out would be by asking Quora itself and this is what the site told me...

Quora is different because of the community who uses it and because it builds off other services like Facebook and twitter. Quora’s founders have sworn they will never sell the website and because of D’Angelo’s background with Facebook, he understands the importance of real names (which are required) and profiles of users for a site like Quora. Saying that, once you are logged in you still have the choice of being able to edit information and answer questions as either an anonymous user or a public user (which will display your profile next to your answer). To register for Quora you have to link either your Facebook or your Twitter account which creates a real sense of community and a high quality of information.

Quora features an excellent rowing category, where anyone who’s interested in rowing, can exchange information, ask questions or help to answer other user’s questions. An example of the quality if information to be found in Quora's rowing category is this discussion on what makes Harry Parker such a successful rowing coach. Check it out here.
