Q. Is Coxmate compatible with my current harness/speaker setup?

A. Coxmate is compatible with the Nielsen Kellerman® Cox-Box™ and Cox-Vox™ cable harness, stroke sensor and speakers.

Q. What is effect of leaving unit on permanent charge?

A. None. Unit turns charge current off once batteries are fully charged, and can be left permanently connected to charger without harm.

Q. How frequently should I grease connectors?

A. This depends on the environment, frequency of use and how well looked after the system is. If you are rowing on salt water, then it is important to rinse off salt from electrical contact surfaces after rowing. The purpose of the grease is twofold. Firstly it reduces friction on rubber surfaces to make connecting/disconnecting easier, and secondly it coats the electrical contacts and prevents corrosion. The Coxmate silicone grease is a special type designed to perform both these functions. In a fresh water environment, where equipment is well cared for, greasing would only be required a couple of times a season. However prevention is better than cure and a monthly regime of inspecting and greasing is recommended.

Q. If I need to replace battery, can I do it myself?

A. Yes. You need a screwdriver to remove lid of enclosure. The battery can then be removed. It is held in place by two straps, and has a lead which can be unplugged – no soldering required.

Q. Should there be a hole in speaker enclosure?

A. Yes. There is a tiny hole, approx 1mm diameter hole. This is covered with a special membrane on the inside of the enclosure. This membrane allows air, but not water to pass through. This enables the internal speaker pressure to be equalized with ambient pressure, avoiding the speaker cone being forced out of magnet when temperature rises and pressure increases.

Q. Why do you use four speakers in an eight?

A. To make sound more even through boat. It is difficult to evenly distribute sound through boat with 3. The affect of this is to reduce volume required, making it easier for Cox to communicate with his/her own crew and not the boat alongside.
